Andy Johnson’s brace helped Everton to continue their impressive start to the season with a resounding 3-0 victory over deadly rivals Liverpool.

The 204th Merseyside Derby took place in brilliant midday sunshine and Tim Cahill opened the scoring in controversial fashion on 24 minutes with Steve Finnan appearing to be fouled before the Australian slid the ball under Pepe Reina’s body from close range.

The Toffees’ record summer signing Andy Johnson then grabbed his third goal in his first four games for the club after Jamie Carragher failed to clear and the striker calmly slotted past Reina.

Liverpool continued to search for a route back into the game with their enigmatic skipper Steven Gerrard having several long-rage opportunities that could not quite find the target. The Reds were also unlucky not be awarded a penalty when a Sami Hyypia cutback appeared to be handled by Tony Hibbert.

In the final stages of the match, Lee Carsley’s stinging shot was twice thrust in the air by Reina before Johnson nodded it in practically on the goal-line and a freak goal had secured a famous, highly satisfying win for the blue half of the city.

It was Everton’s biggest derby victory for 42 years and only their third in seven years. It leaves them just two points off top in third while their neighbours’ indifferent start to the campaign sees them sat in 10th.
