FIRST AWAY WIN SINCE MARCH
Everton proved they were undeterred by Andre Gomes’ horrific injury the previous weekend, as they secured a vital 2-1 away win at Southampton, which pushed them away from the relegation zone.
The Blues made a dream start when after just four minutes, Mason Holgate’s flick on from a corner was headed home by Tom Davies for his first goal since he scored against the same opponents in the closing stages of the 2017-18 campaign. Southampton really struggled to get going at all in the first half but the Toffees proved unable to carve out any clear cut chances that may have extended their lead.
They would come to regret this as the Saints came out a lot stronger in the second half and Everton’s nemesis Danny Ings scored against them again to level the score on 50 minutes. The remainder of the game went between the two sides but it was the Blues who got the deciding goal when with 15 minutes remaining, Djibril Sidibe sent in a perfect cross from the right and Richarlison met it with a sweet low volley that went under Southampton keeper Alex McCarthy.
It proved to be Everton’s first away win in almost eight months and they certainly made hard work of it but it was the Brazilian who made the difference and gave the Blues a big boost going into the international break.
