BOUNCING BACK IN THE CUP
Everton responded to the disappointing defeat against Sheffield United on the Saturday by beating the other side from Sheffield 2-0 at Hillsborough on the Tuesday, securing a safe passage to the Carabao Cup Fourth Round.
In a day to remember for former Blade Dominic Calvert-Lewin, within ten minutes he had scored twice to put Everton into a commanding 2-0 lead. The first goal came when he was picked out by a cross-field ball from Djibril Sidibe, took the ball down on his chest and then thundered the ball into the back of the net, smacking the underside of the crossbar on its way in. The second came when Bernard played a quick through ball for Iwobi inside the area and he squared unselfishly for Calvert-Lewin to poke in his second.
Rather than put the game to bed, thereafter Everton took their foot off the gas and allowed Wednesday back into the game. The Owls had several headed opportunities that easily could’ve gone in with Everton defending poorly. But Everton also had a good chance to finish off the game late on when Digne hit a low strike across goal that just went wide of the far post.
It was not the most convincing of wins from the Toffees’ point of view but it was a win that ensured Everton were still riding high in the Carabao Cup as well as serving as a huge confidence boost for Calvert-Lewin.
